James Niedermayer
For this month, Winnipeg River Arts Council features James Niedermayer, a Manitoba-based chainsaw artist known for transforming raw timber into striking works of art that celebrate nature, craftsmanship, and the power of creativity.
Niedermayer grew up in Powerview, Manitoba, and now makes art in his home near Silver Falls. Renowned across the prairies and in many other chainsaw-loving locations, he has built a reputation for his ability to bring wood to life through dynamic movement, fine detail, and expressive form.
He said, “After I began entering competitions and carving festivals such as the Ridgway Chainsaw Carver Rendezvous in Pennsylvania and numerous Canadian chain-saw carving challenges, my carving career blossomed.”
With a deep respect for natural materials, Niedermayer approaches each sculpture as a collaboration with the wood itself, allowing the grain, texture, and character of each log to influence the final piece. His work often features wildlife, outdoor themes, and custom designs that reflect the spirit of the land and the people who call it home.
Over the years, Niedermayer has created chainsaw sculptures for private collectors, public spaces, businesses, and community projects across Manitoba and beyond. One notable project was carving eagles as a prop for a movie being shot here in Manitoba. His carvings range from bold, large-scale statement pieces to finely detailed works that showcase precision and control, and he uses the chainsaw as an artistic tool.
Through live carving demonstrations and custom commissions, he continues to engage audiences and share the unique art form of chainsaw sculpture. In addition to his competitive achievements, Niedermayer is deeply involved in the chainsaw carving community, helping organize events and sharing his expertise with fellow artists and enthusiasts. His work has become a part of public art displays and festivals throughout western Canada, and he is recognized as one of Manitoba’s most influential and respected chainsaw artists.
